HARLINGEN — U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela will host a congressional summit in Harlingen focusing on veterans’ issues, employment, health care, education and financial literacy.

This event is free and open to all residents in the 34th District of Texas.

“The congressional summit will bring together local, state and federal partners to provide information on issues important to South Texas families,” Vela said.

“I look forward to visiting with veterans and others to hear their concerns.”
At the summit, Vela and community partners will provide constituents with a one-stop shop where they can visit with community service organizations, government representatives and even prospective employers.

“As a congressional representative, an important part of my job is connecting my constituents with the services and information they need, and I encourage anyone who requires help cutting through red tape with a federal agency to attend the summit or to contact me through one of my district offices,” Vela said.

Those looking for a job are encouraged to bring their resume, work history, references and other documents needed to apply for employment.

Local medical partners will provide health care screenings and representatives from local, state and federal organizations who specialize in health care, education and financial literacy will be available to provide information and referrals.

Vela’s staff will be on hand to help constituents navigate the federal benefits process.

They will assist with issues ranging from Social Security disability claims to questions for the IRS on tax returns to assistance from Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Anyone requiring assistance should bring supporting documents and veterans will need their DD 214 Form for appropriate processing of VA-related casework.
